Norwegian Royal Award to Dragan Marković – ceremony Friday 11 May

At a ceremony in the Norwegian Embassy’s residence in Belgrade Friday, May 11, 2012 Mr. Dragan Marković was presented the Royal Order of Merit, Knight of 1st. Class. The ceremony was chaired by His Excellency Ambassador Nils Ragnar Kamsvåg and wife, Josephine.

Present were invited friends and others who have helped and influenced Dragan’s life, and otherwise supported the various activities that were the basis for his appointment. Dragan received the order of merit because of his relentless work through more than 30 years of promoting friendship between Norway and the former Yugoslavia, now Serbia, and for the exchange of culture and language through his language school in Belgrade.

Present at the ceremony was also the leader of the Friendship Association Norway – Western Balkans, Mrs. Wenche Malmedal who on behalf of the organization announced their support for the appointment. Dragan’s wife, Zorica Nikolic-Marković , was especially thanked for the support she had provided through all the years, not only to all visiting Norwegians, but also the incredible support she has been for Dragan. Zorica received a gift with the slogan “feisty ladies”, which became a certain translation problem.

Dragan received a gift from the husband, Oluf Føinum, of the daughter, Åse of the first Norwegian who the Yugoslav prisoners of war met after the German capitulation in 1945. Arne Hansen Langvik arrived at the prisoner of war camp established at the Arctic Circle as a representative of the Norwegian Red Cross.
Mr. Langvik Hansen was later one of the pioneering persons for the establishment of the friendship association and as a contact in the early years.

In his acceptance speech, Dragan emphasized that it would not have been possible to do what he has done without the support he has got from home.
Otherwise, of course, he thanked King Harald 5th for the honor that was granted and said he hoped that this would increase the interest of the friendship work between our two countries.
Dragan has not been in Norway for some years, but now he has to make the trip as he, as customary, has to thank the Grand Master of the Order (the King) in person.
PS: He would from now like to be addressed as “Sir” or “Vitez”!
