Music Without Borders 2011

Cultural cooperation between young people from Ørland, Bjugn, Orkdal and Vefsn (municipalities in Norway) and their sister cities in Bosnia & Herzegovina and Serbia.

Friendship Association Norway – Western Balkans (former Norwegian-Yugoslavian Friendship Association), has been around for over 40 years and have always had youth work and cultural exchange as key priorities. The Friendship Association – Serbia has developed cooperation throughout the whole ex-Yugoslavia area and Norwegian-Yugoslav Friendship Association had friendship associations in all former Yugoslav countries. After the Balkan wars in the 90’s there was less activities directed towards the former Yugoslavia, but now we see the time is ripe to initiate projects across borders in the Western Balkans.

“Music without borders” is a project that has been conducted for several years, but only with Norwegian and Serbian participation. For 2011. both we and our Serbian sister organization, the Friendship Association – Serbia, have a desire to expand the project to more countries in the former Yugoslavia. Four Norwegian municipalities have agreed to participate in this with their friendship municipalities in the Western Balkans. Municipalities are Vefsn (NOR), Gornji Milanovac (SRB), Ørland (NOR), Bjugn (NOR), Orkdal (NOR) and Mostar (BIH). These municipalities are selected on the basis of active friendship agreements, ongoing cooperation projects and a good foundation to build friendships based on contacts between young people from these municipalities.

“Music without borders” is aimed at young people between 14-20 years and this year’s subject is rock music.

Young people will meet in Gornji Milanovac and practice together through 4 days. The practice program is built up of seminars where professional musicians are instructors. Each municipality will be represented by a group of youths and established rock groups. The young people are welcome to stay with families of their peers in Gornji Milanovac, while managers stay in a hotel.

Through workshops and final public concerts in Gornji Milanovac and Obrenovac young people will build networks and both the festival, and workshops will reinforce intercultural dialogue.

Youth will also participate in the organization of the festival. The music festival will be conducted together with partner organizations (CSO “Free Space” from Gornji Milanovac and The Cultural Center of Gornji Milanovac).
